Dear IASW Colleagues We are carrying out research into social workers’ use of community work in their practice. We are very interested in hearing from social workers who are engaging in or practicing community work within their current work setting with a view to interviewing them about their involvement with communities. We have a particular interest in social workers’ use of a collective approach in their work. The objective of the project is to strengthen the links between theory, research and practice in our teaching on the Master of Social Work (MSW) programme in University College Cork. The research findings will be used to facilitate students’ engagement with community work ideas and to incorporate contemporary practice themes and dilemmas. The research is funded by NAIRTL (National Academy for Integration of Research & Teaching and Learning) and conforms to research ethical guidelines and the IASW Code of Ethics. The contribution that social workers make to communities is often unacknowledged and this project provides an opportunity to profile and disseminate this work. The research will also explore the need for an active network of practitioners and academics to discuss the research findings, and exchange and develop ideas on teaching, research and practice.
