Speakers

Dr Pauline Prior is a senior lecturer in Social Policy at Queen’s University Belfast. She did her undergraduate degree in Cork, her master’s in London and her doctorate in York. Before coming to Queen’s, she worked as a community development worker in Zambia and Ethiopia and as a social worker in Belfast and Antrim.  She has written articles and books on different aspect of mental health care, including Mental Health Care and Politics in NI (1993); Gender and Mental Health (1999) and Madness and Murder (2008).

John Redican is the Chief Executive Officer for the National Service Users Executive (NSUE). Before this he worked with Nexus Research (Europe) on research and evaluation projects in Ireland and the EU. He has directed and worked on several other research initiatives, and his work with marginalized groups in society was recognized with an inaugural Irish Social Entrepreneurs award in 2005.

He believes that the dignity of mental health service users is compromised by models of service delivery, particularly in acute facilities, and that the stigma which attaches to people with mental health problems in the community is a driving factor in the discrimination which occurs. In April of 2007 he was appointed to the Mental Health Commission of Ireland, and in 2009 was appointed to the Independent Monitoring Group for Vision for Change, the National Mental Health Policy.

Jennifer Kelly was one of the founder members of Bodywhys, of which she is still a Director, and has been involved in every aspect of the organisation from its inception in 1995 to the present day. Over the last 15 years she has become experienced in all aspects of the voluntary mental health sector and its management.  In 2007 she was nominated by Bodywhys to the National Service Users Executive and has served as Chairman since its inauguration.  In her capacity as Chair of NSUE she is part of many working committees of the HSE representing the views of those who use mental health services and their families in the design and delivery of services.

Mary Donaghy (Social Care Commissioning Lead Mental Health & Leading Disability, Health & Social Care Board NI) has been a qualified Social Worker since 1983 and has worked in Children’s Services for 27 years in residential and community Social Work teams.  Since 1997 she managed the F&CC programme at APSW & PSW level in South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland, covering community and residential services. From 2004 she managed CAMHS and Children’s disability for a 2 year period and continued to manage children’s disability unit April 2009.

She has been leading on the Mental Health and Children’s Services project Think Child, Think Parent, Think Family since April 2009. The project is one of six pilot sites in the UK, spanning a 3 year period until March 2012 under the direction of Social Care Institute of Excellence.

Northern Ireland is a regional pilot site and is using the Social Care Institute of Excellence guidance and 9 recommendations contained within it to begin to change the culture and thinking of practice at the Mental Health and Children’s Services interface.
