Dr Carole Holohan - Exploring the role of State and Society in the Ferns, Ryan, Murphy and Cloyne Reports. Content: The Ryan Report recognised that the report “should give rise to debate and reflection”, noting that “many of the lessons to be learned had contemporary applications for the protection of vulnerable people” However, it can be argued that the national conversation surrounding this and other reports dealing with child abuse has been limited, and that it sometimes missed major points. Understandably, much of the focus has been on the Catholic Church – members of the church who perpetrated and covered up the abuse of children for decades. Less attention has been given to the role of State and society. A Red C poll undertaken in 2011 indicated that there is a clear understanding that the State also failed in its duty towards children while a high percentage agreed that wider society has some responsibility for what happened. Based on research undertaken for Amnesty International Ireland, this presentation will focus on the role of State and society by highlighting issues of responsibility and accountability amongst state agents, particularly the Department of Education and the health authorities. It will also look at societal responses to abuse and attitudes to identity, status and children which may have facilitated abuse and which further harmed victims of that abuse.

Outline: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a major psychotherapeutic approach which aims to assist individuals who are experiencing a wide range of emotional difficulties. CBT is based on the premise that how one thinks affects how one feels and behaves. During times of distress, people can have very negative and unhelpful thoughts about themselves and their world. This can worsen how they feel and in turn they may behave in ways that increases and extends their distress. CBT strategies help the distressed person learn to identify and change their unhelpful thinking and behaviour and in doing so improve how they feel. CBT can be delivered in a variety of ways from structured individual therapy to self-help work . This workshop will offer participants an introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and demonstrate how they may integrate key CBT techniques and skills into their current social work practice. Speaker: Jeanne is a senior Medical Social Worker in Liaison Psychiatry in Beaumont Hospital. She has completed a Post Graduate diploma in Cognitive Psychotherapy and is currently using it regularly in her practice.
