Statement from CIAA January 26th 2009 The Council of Irish Adoption Agencies is an umbrella body incorporating all adoption agencies, both voluntary and statutory, in the Republic of Ireland. Council members meet a number of times each year to consider, address and advocate on the basis of best practice in all aspects of adoption. The Council of Irish Adoption Agencies welcomes the publication of the Adoption Bill 2009 by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Barry Andrews TD. We welcome in particular the incorporation of the 1993 Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in respect of Intercountry adoption. The incorporation of the Hague convention will mean greater protection for children who are placed for adoption. We also welcome the Minister’s commitment to place children interest as paramount at all times in the adoption process. We regret that the Bill does not address the issues involved in information and tracing or post adoption services. The Council look forward to providing a more detailed response to the Bill in the coming weeks as debate on the Bill proceeds through the Houses of the Oireachtas.
