The Adult Mental Health Special Interest Group (SWAMH) would like to acknowledge and express our sadness regarding the death last January of one of our colleagues Gerard Liebrechts. Gerard worked in Dunshaughlin Adult Mental Health Services for the last four years and before that Louth Adult Mental Health Service. Gerard was a very popular social worker among his colleagues, and many have paid tribute to him in terms of what a generous and caring person he was. In our opinion Gerard was the type of person who went the extra mile in trying to assist both clients and colleagues. Gerard was an active member of SWAMH since moving to Ireland over seven years ago, and in 2005 he took on the role of Treasurer. While we all feel his loss, particularly his colleagues in Louth/ Meath Mental Health Services, we also extend our condolences to Gerard's wife Lesley and his extended family and friends.
SWAMH AGM occurred on the 25th of March at St Patrick’s Hospital Dublin 8: Presentations included one on elder abuse, by Kristen Murphy and Bernadette Casey, both senior social workers for the protection of older persons, they advised all social workers working with vulnerable adults to review an excellent web site, The National Centre for the Protection of Older People (NCPOP). The second presentation was by Bridget Harney, senior occupational therapist in the Wicklow Mental Health Service, she presented on the Mental Health Recovery Star, assessment tool, SWAMH advises all adult mental health social workers to download this assessment tool, as it is an excellent tool in working with vulnerable persons with mental health issues.
SWAMH elected a new committee for 2011/2012, the executive officers are:
Chair Frank Browne
Hon. Sec. Claire O Regan
Treasurer Aideen Mc Donnel
