The conference will be of interest to social workers, policy makers, researchers, legal professionals, social care workers, students and anyone with an interest in the field of child protection and welfare. This conference is a not-for-profit event. €50 conference fee, €35 IASW members, €25 students and €20 unwaged. Book early as first 2 conferences were sold out at least 6 weeks in advance.

This conference is a joint partnership between the Social Work Development Unit (UCC), the Health Service Executive South and the Irish Association of Social Workers Southern Branch.

 The Southern Branch of the IASW continued to forge close links with Social Work Department, University College Cork during the past year. Committee members attended information sessions regarding IASW for social work students on campus and these enjoyed good attendances.

Questionnaires were circulated to Social Workers within Southern Region regarding their preferences for topics to be included in upcoming CPD sessions. These questionnaires are currently under consideration regarding the selection of topics and speakers for these sessions.

This was a busy year for the Southern Region Branch, the highlight being the hosting of the biennial Social Work Conference in UCC on 23-10-09. This was held jointly with UCC and HSE.  The title of the Conference was Keeping Children Safe: Critical Times, Critical Issues.  This was the second such Conference and attracted a large attendance and also a fair amount of media coverage.   

A number of Continual Professional Development (CPD) workshops were also held;

  • 25/5/09 “Fit between Family Therapy and Social Unit”
  • 8/2/10   “Children’s Rights in Post Separation Conflict Situations”    
  • 25/2/10  “Using Group work in Practice, in learning and teaching social work; an empowerment based approach”
  • 1/3/10  “Irish Father’s Parenting Experiences with their Disabled Child”
  • 23/3/10 to mark World Social Work Day a Seminar was held regarding the “Rights of the Child”       

Other areas looked at the monthly branch meetings included Supervision and also the issue of proportionate responsibility for Social Workers i.e. Social Workers carrying responsibility proportionate to their authority.

Workshop Title: ‘Irish Father's Parenting Experiences with their Disabled Child, an Exploratory Study’.

When: Monday the 1st of  March, 5.30pm- 6.30pm.
Where: Room 2.24, Brookfield, UCC
Presenter: Aidan Cooney.
Presentation: Aidan is a previous graduate of UCC and was student representative on the IASW national executive. Aidan is completing a postgraduate Msc in King's College Institute of Psychiatry, with his PHD study focusing on the above topic. This presentation will be an exploration on gender absence in empirical Social work studies which relate to families parenting experiences with disabled child. This presentation will also aim to address a gendered occupational view of men and caring among Social workers.

The Presentation will look at how, as Social Workers, we understand the violence that is increasingly part of our job, how we respond to it and what we might do to anticipate and prevent it.  Their will be time allowed for questions and discussions. About Phil Mortell: Phil Mortell has recently retired after 19 years as a Principal Social Worker with the HSE in the Mid-West area.  He is now working as a free-lance social worker, counsellor, trainer and facilitator.  He lectures occasionally on social work courses in both UCC and UCD. In Annexe, UCC On 19/1/09 @  5.30 pm All welcomeAdmission: 5 euro,  IASW members free.
