Social Work Practice Research: Learning from the praxis work of Heikki Waris Institute, Helsinki, Fi

The Irish Association of Social Workers, the UNESCO Child & Family Research Centre, the MA in Social Work Programme at NUI Galway with the West of Ireland Branch of the IASW Practitioner Research Group warmly invite you to a seminar and discussion with Professor Mirja Satka from the University of Helsinki in Finland.

Professor Satka’s seminar will share with the audience her experience of leading practice research projects via the Heikki Waris Institute in Finland.  Her approach will emphasize that Research-minded expertise requires ‘not only lectures or textbooks but also ongoing interaction between service organizations, service practitioners, service users, and researchers.  An opportunity for open discussion will also be provided.  


Professor Mirja Satka is a Professor of Social Work Practice Research at the University of Helsinki in Finland.  As part of her role within the University of Helsinki, she supervises the pedagogical activities and practice research projects at the Heikki Waris Institute, The Institute brings members from the Department of Social Research at the University of Helsinki, universities of applied sciences in the field, social work units in the metropolitan area and the third sector together to colloborate on research and education relating to urban social work.   Professor Satka acts as an expert in social work practice research in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Her main research interests include university pedagogy, childhood and child protection research, generational relations and history of social work. For more information, please see:
