Join HSCP colleagues for an engaging online event focused on promoting inclusive healthcare practices for neurodiverse individuals and organised by Podiatry Ireland.
This is a HSE HSCPO funded interdisciplinary event and will take place over two sessions on 3rd & 10th September from 6.00 - 7.30pm.
The event is led by Barb Mitchell, a neuro-affirming human-rights advocate and coach who specialises in supporting the needs of neurodivergent people in all areas of their lives. As a person with Autism and Ehler Danlos Syndrome she understands the issues patients face in healthcare.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the training, participants will have knowledge and understanding of:
· Autism and neurodivergence, and the principles of patient-centred neuro- affirmative practice
· Appropriate and respectful language when referring to autism, neurodivergence and disability
· Common myths and biases about autistic individuals, including those affecting both adults and children
· The communication, sensory, and executive functioning differences often seen in autistic patients, and how these may present in healthcare contexts (including supporting non-speaking patients)
· Improving pre-appointment preparation through tools (e.g. videos, healthcare passports) and clear information sharing
· Making reasonable accommodations for patients, including navigating practical limitations with transparency and creativity
· Recognising and responding to a patient’s own cues and preferences, with caregiver input used supportively where appropriate.
