Social Workers in Ageing / Older Persons

The IASW Special Interest Group on Ageing (SIGA) is a group of social workers that work with older persons, who wish to pursue the best interests of older persons and promote professional development of social work practice with older persons.

SIGA members work with older persons in a variety of settings in the community, hospitals and residential care settings across the country.

SIGA's Vision Statement

Social workers engaging in the highest standards of professional practice with older persons, promoting positive ageing, supporting autonomy and self-determination and advocating for continuous improvement in service delivery.

SIGA's Mission Statement

SIGA, as a Special Interest Group of IASW, seeks to enable the continuous professional development of social work practice with older persons and represent the needs of older persons from a social work perspective

SIGA's Objectives

SIGA members have agreed four objectives for SIGA for the 2017-2018 term:

  1. Provision of a professional forum for social workers practicing with older persons to exchange information and support.
  2. Influence policy, legislation and service delivery via the IASW structures.
  3. Promoting the professional development of social work practice, to include examining opportunities to provide education and active involvement in research.
  4. Advocacy / representation on the needs of older persons from a social work perspective.
