CORU updating the Standards of Proficiency for Social Workers.

  • 22 Aug 2016

As part of the initial review, CORU are holding a focus group for the profession

22nd August

Dear Registrant,

CORU is currently updating the Standards of Proficiency for Social Workers. These are the threshold standards required for entering the register and are used in the approval and monitoring of education and training programmes and for assessing overseas qualifications.

As part of the initial review,  we are holding a focus group for the profession. Both (1) new and recent graduates and (2) employers, managers and supervisors are invited to participate in the focus group, as these groups can provide specific insight into the Standards of Proficiency in practice. These focus groups will inform the work of the CORU Executive and will be included in the report and draft Standards of Proficiency presented to the Social Workers Registration Board.

The focus groups will be held on September 14 2016 in Dublin City Centre and will run for no longer than 1.5 hours.  Participants will be asked to provide feedback on the proposed Standards of Proficiency in a group setting. There will be no pre-reading required as all relevant information will be provided during the focus group.

Please note that new and recent graduates are those who have qualified as social workers since 2014.  All those interested in attending the focus group for employers, managers and supervisors should have managerial or supervisory responsibility for junior social workers as part of their current role.

Please express your interest in participating through this online form. Places are limited in these focus groups and unfortunately it will not be possible to accommodate all interested parties. Please be advised that expressing interest is not a guarantee of participation. A member of the Executive will be in touch in due course. Please note CORU will not be in a position to pay travel and subsistence for those who attend the focus group.

These focus groups are not in lieu of wider consultation. The final draft Standards of Proficiency will be approved by the Board and circulated widely for stakeholder consultation. All registrants will be given the opportunity to contribute during the stakeholder consultation.

If you have any queries, please email

Kind regards,

Education Team
