2 July 2021 IASW & Care Champions Call For Urgent Action to Protect Nursing Home Residents

The Workplace Relations Commission has identified social work as the lead profession in adult safeguarding in Ireland.

Safeguarding Expert, Irish Association of Social Work member, and Assistant Professor in the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, Dr. Sarah Donnelly, along with Majella Beattie, Chair of Care Champions (a family led advocacy group) appeared on RTE Investigates feature on care failings in nursing homes, on last night's Prime Time. The programme is available to watch here  RTÉ Player.

Families supported by Care Champions over the last year shared their harrowing accounts of their experiences of care failings.

The Workplace Relations Commission has identified social work as the lead profession in adult safeguarding in Ireland. Social workers have repeatedly written to Government outlining our serious concerns and offering solutions regarding safeguarding in the nursing home sector during the pandemic. Care Champions have repeatedly shared accounts of poor quality care, abuse and neglect, in the nursing home sector. Government has so far failed to respond adequately to both professionals’ and family concerns.

A copy of the joint statement from IASW & Care Champions can be found below.

We are stronger together, and we need to use our voices to demand much needed change in many areas of Nursing Home care.

You can sign the petition here. Please feel free to share this petition with colleagues, family members, friends or share on social media.
